UFC 171 has just gotten a lot more interesting with the announcement of Jon Jones vs Glover Teixeira for the March 15th card.
Jon “Bones” Jones is coming off of the hardest fight of his professional career, a victory over Alexander Gustafsson. If the fight was a traditional 3 round bout he would’ve lost by unanimous decision, but the championship rounds exist for a reason and Jones dominated both of those rounds with elbows.
Jones is without a doubt the best light heavyweight the UFC has ever seen and is currently on a 10 fight win streak (a record 6 title defenses). With that being said, it is easy to see that record ending in March.
Teixeira has long been considered the likely downfall of “Bones” Jones. Teixeira is on a 20 match winning streak, which features 13 KOs and 6 submission victories. He doesn’t let fights get to the cards…He ends them.
Known for his heavy hands, Teixeira, is just as skilled on the mat and has better grappling than the current champ. Before Gustafsson it was thought that getting Jones to the mat was relatively impossible; that is no longer the case.
2014 is shaping up to be a tough year for “Bones” Jones. Looking forward, and assuming victories by Jones, his fight schedule could look like this: Teixeira (Light-Heavy), Gustafsson (Light-Heavy), Cain Velasquez (Heavy).
It’ll be a run for the record books if Jones can succeed, but the journey will be an arduous one to say the least.
