Rudy Gay Says $19.3 Million Option ‘Isn’t Really About The Money’

Rudy Gay just got traded from the Toronto Raptors to the Sacramento Kings last Monday. He holds a player option for next season that would pay him $19.3 million. The only person that seems to think he would walk away from that is Gay himself when asked about opting out:

“Um, I don’t know,” he said with a smile. “Honestly, people out there can think what they want, but it’s really not as much about the money as you’d think. You know, obviously, I’ve made a lot of money in my career. And with God’s help, and with my knees and everything being healthy, hopefully I can make a lot more.”

It’s nice to say you want to play for a contender but Rudy Gay is very overpaid for his production at $19.3 million. He shouldn’t opt out because he will not get more than that next year on the free agent market. Perhaps after his $19.3 million season, he would take a pay cut to be on a winning team.
