Just some shade being thrown or is there some true merit to what Scott Boras has to say?
The relationship between super-agent Scott Boras and Jay Z has been strained to say the least. Hov threw shots at Boras on his latest album and ultimately stole his client Robinson Cano from him. If you have been following the news, you know Cano just signed a mega-deal deal with the Seattle Mariners for 10-years, $240 million. One might think that fellow agents would applaud Jay for what he was able to accomplish with the deal.
Boras had other ideas.
“When you’re bringing the prettiest girl to the prom, you don’t really pay attention to who he’s dancing with, unless it’s a very unusual step,” Boras said at the winter meetings Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
The AP says that quote was part of Boras saying it was Cano’s talent, not his representation, that got him the deal.
Boras also said it’s easier for Jay-Z to get a big deal after all the groundwork agents like him have laid.
“It’s very different to be the creator of the umbrella versus those who stand under it,” Boras said.
If you read between the lines, you can see that Boras is saying that Cano’s talent got him that contract and it had little to do with Jay Z.
He does have kind of a point Ultimately Cano will be the one playing on the field in Seattle and hopefully giving them a solid return on an investment for the next decade. But to completely dismiss Jay as if he played no role at all? Just a little shade from Boras.
Regardless, it’ll be fun to see these two giants fight it out over clients for years to come. I never doubt Jay Z, and Boras’ resume of clients and major deals speaks for itself. Alex Rodriguez can attest to that one.
