Game 1: #8 Kansas vs. #9 Kansas State
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Championship started with a bang between in state rivals Kansas and Kansas State. If this game is any indication of how the rest of the tournament will go, this will be an exhilarating weekend for women’s basketball.
Kansas State pounced on Kansas quickly gaining a 28-12 lead. After a timeout called by Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson the Jayhawks quickly turned up the heat and were able to overcome the 16-point deficit fueled by senior guard Cece Harper and junior forward Chelsea Gardner to take a two point lead with 13 seconds left in the game. An offensive put back by Kansas State’s Breanna Lewis at the buzzer forced the game into overtime but Kansas proved to be too much for a young Kansas State team defeating them 87-84. Kansas will move on to play the #1 seeded Baylor Lady Bears at 1:30 Saturday.
Game 2: #7 TCU vs. #10 Texas Tech
Despite being 0-18 in conference play Texas Tech came out determined to get their first win in conference. Amber Battle carried the Lady Raiders into half time leading the Horned Frogs 34-33 after scoring 15 points on 7-11 shooting. Eventually the Horned Frogs got control of the game outscoring the Lady Raiders 42-25 in the 2nd half to advance to the next round where they will meet the Big 12 co-champion West Virginia Mountaineers.
