Report: Colin Kaepernick Looking For $18M Per Season

I honestly thought his asking price would be higher, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Colin Kaepernick could be harder to appease contractually than even Jim Harbaugh.  Kaepernick is due to earn $973,000 this year, but according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, the 49ers star signal caller is looking for $18 million per year as part of a long-term deal.

The 49ers and quarterback Colin Kaepernick began discussions on a new contract extension at the combine, and sources tell us that the three-year veteran wants a deal similar or slightly better than the ones given to Jay Cutler ($18.1 million per year, $38 million guarantee) and Tony Romo ($18 million per year, $40 million guarantee). While no one expects the 49ers to let Kaepernick go anywhere, we hear that if the 49ers don’t get in Kaepernick’s range, the quarterback would be willing to play the 2014 season at his base salary of $973,766 and postpone negotiations until next offseason instead of signing a below-market deal.

That would put Kaepernick in the same ballpark as Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, and slightly ahead of Lions quarterback  Matthew Stafford, who averages $17.6 million per year.
