Shabazz Napier: “Hard To See My Jersey Getting Sold While I Starve” (Video)

Shabazz Napier Final Four

Shabazz Napier is a Senior now, the best point guard in college basketball and 40 minutes from a national title.  Those accolades alone allow for some deep thinking conversation and questions about big time college sports and the treatment of those athletes.

Napier, the star point guard for The University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed “starving” because he cannot afford food.

Napier simplified it and told reporters that “it’s hard for him to see his jersey getting sold while he struggles to eat.”

“To some credit, you feel like you want something in return… Like I said, there are hungry nights that I go to bed and I am starving. So something can change, something should change. But if it doesn’t, at the end of the day, we’ve been doing this for so long, so …,” he said.

I’m not sure if we can ever solve the solution of players getting paid, but I’ve always wondered why big time universities can make so guys can at least eat and have access to all the meals they want in the dorm at least.   The fact that Napier and the Huskies are this close to hanging up another banner, yet can’t pigout at night is disappointing and revealing at the same time.
