Texas Tech is investigating a violent incident that occurred between two student athletes. According to reports, women’s basketball player Amber Battle and incoming football recruit Nigel Bethel were playing basketball at the school’s rec center when an altercation erupted where Bethel punched Battle in the face and allegedly broke her nose, which will require surgery
Details are still emerging and Texas Tech has not officially commented on the situation, other than to acknowledge an incident between two students. Privacy laws prevent the school from publicly identifying the students. Police are currently investigating the case but are not expected to have a report available until after the weekend.
“(It) likely won’t be ready before Monday,” spokesman Chris Cook said.
Williams and Rafique’s account alleges that Bethel punched Battle in the face while playing basketball at the rec center. No other specifics of the events that transpired were made available at this time.
Battle is now a senior, and Bethel is incoming from the well renowned Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, FL. The school is investigating the incident, and Bethel’s future with the program depends on the outcome. However, The Avalanche Journal reported that Bethel deleted a tweet that said, “trouble always seems to find me….”
No one else from Texas Tech’s program has commented on the incident, so we can only wait and see what will become of Bethel.
