Kenny Bell may have led the Cornhuskers in receiving yards the last three-straight seasons, but apparently the water and energy companies in the area aren’t too worried about ensuring he makes it a fourth.
According to Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, the star wideout was forced to go almost two weeks without power or running water, after running out of money. To help rectify the situation, Bell took a job as a bartender often working double shifts (3PM-3AM) to make the ends meet.
“I didn’t have a choice,” said Bell. “At one point I came home and I had no power in my house and my water wasn’t running. I hadn’t paid my bills. I went without power for like a week and half, I didn’t go home. I stayed up at the stadium until I would go to sleep because I couldn’t do anything at my house. All the lights were off. It was terrible.”
Normally, I’d feel zero sympathy for a young man complaining about not being able to pay bills. For those of us that took the independent college route; we definitely know the struggle of Kenny Bell. However, in his situation–being a student athlete at one of the premier athletic programs in the country; there is zero excuse for him to not have money to cover his bills. Future college athletes may not have to endue this inconvenience due to the recent O’Bannon ruling that was held up in court (after the NCAA appealed), however Bell is going into his senior year and will be long gone by the time players see any benefits from a union.
