Penn State-UCF Could Be Affected by Icelandic Volcano

As if The University of Central Florida didn’t already have enough on their plate after having to replace quarterback Blake Bortles, now the team has to worry about environmental conditions during their season opener.

A little less than a week ago it was unknown if the Penn State-UCF season opener would take place due to the Icelandic volcano, which is about 900 miles away from Ireland where the game is supposed to take place. However, set for tomorrow, it looks like the game is a go and the volcano should hopefully have no effect on the game or the departure back to the states.

The volcano has not fully erupted but it has been showing signs that it might. According to the Associated Press :

Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano began erupting Saturday under the country’s largest glacier after a week of seismic activity rattled the area with thousands of earthquakes, the country’s Meteorological Office said.

The eruption prompted Iceland to raise its aviation alert level to red — the highest level on a five-point scale — indicating the threat of “significant emission of ash into the atmosphere.”

If the volcano were to fully erupt, as it did in 2010, it could cause an arising cloud spewing ash into the air for thousands of miles that could prevent the two teams from traveling. We will all hope for the best for the residents of these countries and for the safe travels of both teams.
