Wes Welker Suffers Concussion Against Texans

Denver head coach John Fox confirmed late Saturday night that WR Wes Welker suffered a concussion during the Broncos-Texans preseason tilt, following a questionable hit from Houston safety D.J. Swearinger that got Peyton Manning so fired up he was handed a taunting penalty. It is the 3rd known concussion Welker has received in the last 12 months, the first two coming last season, causing the diminutive slot receiver to miss three games.

“It was determined it was a concussion,” Fox said. “He’ll go through the protocol. The biggest thing on him is, of course, player safety. He’ll go through the protocol.”

“We’ll leave that to the medical people and he won’t come back until he’s ready to come back,” the coach said.

At this point in his career, given his extensive concussion history, it’s difficult to determine whether or not Welker will be ready to go for the season opener in two weeks. But even if he gets medical clearance, maybe it would be in his best interest to hang up the cleats and call it a career, before he completely destroys his brain.
