In an embarrassing 45-14 loss to the NY Giants, Washington fans scratched their head as the warm welcomed back up QB, Kirk Cousins, didn’t seem like himself.
Kirk Cousins was 19/33 with 4 ints for 257 yards, stats that didn’t seem to worry Washington head coach, Jay Gruden. Despite Cousins poor performance, Gruden says the thought of benching Cousins never crossed his mind.
“Sometimes you need to play through some of these ruts,” coach Jay Gruden told reporters after the game. “As a quarterback, he’s the guy that is going to have to lead us in these next few weeks. We need him to pull himself out of it, and keep his head up and move forward to the Seattle Seahawks when we get back.”
“I think he was trying to force them,” Gruden said of the quarterback’s interceptions. “He didn’t see one of them. He tried to force one to wide [receiver] Ryan Grant on one of them; he obviously threw one downfield. The one to [receiver] DeSean [Jackson], he got hit right in the chest as he was throwing. A lot of them were forced, he didn’t see people, and some of them were pressure related. It’s a combination of things. We by no means can put the blame on Kirk for this game. This was a total team debacle and total domination by the Giants in all phases. We had a chance there and came back out the second half and we got a touchdown to cut the lead, and the interceptions started to happen, but unfortunate.”
Cousins has been a fan favorite lately with some even calling for him to take over as head QB but with last nights performance, fans are starting to think a little different. Gruden has done a great job standing behind his decision in Cousins as well as having a united front. Players need to know that despite the mistakes they make, their coaches won’t give up on them. Peyton Manning or Tom Brady weren’t made in a day much less a season, Im sure Kirk will turn things around and become the QB Washington fans are confident of.
