After video evidence surfaced of Ray Rice gruesomely beating his then fiancé, Janay Palmer, the NFL and the Ravens immediately distanced themselves from the once highly regarded RB. However, except for the public shame and damning, Rice may be financially ok. Except for the $530K penalty Rice has had to so far incur, he’s reportedly able to retain approximately $25 million of the $35 million contract the Ravens gave him in 2012.
Rice signed a 5-year, $35 million deal in 2012, $15 million of which was a signing bonus.
He got another $7 million bonus in 2013, and also collected $3 million in salary over the first two years of the contract.
The collected money cannot be taken back by the NFL. Rice is set to lose about $9.5 million in salary money he was set to receive through the end of the 2016 contract, but that’s about it. $25 million is a lot of money, and if Rice is smart, he’ll be able to live comfortably off of that for the rest of his life.
