Iman Shumpert is entering the 4th and final year of his rookie contract, which makes him eligible for a rookie-scale extension until Oct.31st. According to ESPN sources, the Knicks have not reached out to Shumpert’s camp to begin negotioating that extension. The feeling is that the Knicks are content with letting Shumpert hit restricted free agency in the summer of 2015. Shumpert has been a part of many trade rumors for the last few years, and those were ratcheted up a bit when Phil Jackson took over as president. The Knicks are crowded in the backcourt with JR Smith having already received his extension, and last year’s first round draft pick Tim Hardaway Jr. emerging as a quality young player. The Knicks are trying to keep all of their salary commitments for the summers of 2015 and 2016 at a minimum so that the can be major players in those respective free-agency classes.
