Serena Williams has defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets (6-3, 7-6) to win her sixth Australian Open. The win gives Serena her nineteenth major title in her career. She is now in second place for major winners since the Open era began behind Steffi Graf, who claimed 22 major wins in her career.
At age 33, Serena becomes the oldest woman to win the Australian Open.
