Howard QB Bypasses Draft Process to Sign With CFL’s BC Lions

Greg McGhee

Howard University QB Greg McGhee has decided to bypass the NFL pre-draft process and head straight to a professional career in Canada. NFL Netwroks Ian Rapoport is reporting that the senior QB and MEAC offensive player of the year will sign a contract with the BC Lions, coached by Jeff Tedford.

McGhee passed for 2,379 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 896 yards and three scores to lead the MEAC and rank 18th in the Football Championship Subdivision in total offense.

The left-handed dual threat posted more than 400 yards of offense in two of the Bison’s final three games, all victories. In Howard’s final home game, on Nov. 9, McGhee accounted for 474 total yards and four touchdowns in a 42-14 victory over Savannah State. Included in that performance was a career-best 148 yards rushing despite fumbling on the first possession.

This actually seems like a process that more NCAA sub division athletes should consider. McGhee is getting a chance to go directly into the professional ranks and hone his skills. The early start will surely give him an advantage when it comes to preparation for the 2015 CFL season, and Jeff Tedford should be great working with a dedicated pupil. Tedford was most recently the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Bucs, under head coach Lovie Smith. This will be Tedford’s first year as head coach of the BC Lions, and it looks as if he has hand picked his first QB.

Check out McGhee’s skills in the  video below consisting of his highlights from his senior season.
