The North Carolina Tar Heels started out today’s game verses Georgia Tech with a tribute to the late great Dean Smith. Smith was known for his 4-corners offense and Coach Roy Williams instructed the team to run the 4-corners offense on the first play of the game to honor Dean Smith. The players on the court held up 4 fingers and ran the clock down until Marcus Paige found Brice Johnson open, who finished the play with a lay up. Carolina won the game 89-60 but Coach Williams was quite frustrated after the game and criticize the fans for their lack of enthusiasm.

The UNC crowd is known as more of a ‘wine and cheese’ type crowd. I’ve been to the Dean Dome a few times and excluding highlight plays or nail-biting finishes, the crowd is pretty relaxed, nothing like what you see when watch the a Duke Blue Devils play at Cameron. In this situation when it comes to the tribute to Dean Smith, I think it was unexpected and happened so quickly that fans didn’t really know what was going on and were late to show to their support.
