The Boston Celtics got to see their second year head coach unlike they ever have this past Friday night. Per ESPN,
The Celtics had just endured a head-shaking end to a dreadful first half in a game they absolutely could not afford to lose in their quest for a postseason berth and Stevens let his team know their play was unacceptable.
“I never heard Brad really curse, and he cursed us out pretty good,” said Turner. “I don’t know who came in our locker room, but he came in and started screaming. I jumped. We needed to get it under wraps.
“I knew he was pretty upset. I heard we have no food on the plane [to Indianapolis for Saturday’s game], so I’m pretty sure at halftime he called for no food. Hopefully we don’t have to get him that mad again.”
Most basketball coaches hate when you squander a two-for-one opportunity, but ALL coaches hate when you give up 4 points in less than five seconds at the end of half.
That was the case this past Friday night, and Brad Stevens wasn’t going to allow his team to lose to the Orlando Magic for the second time in a week. He went into that locker room and, sure, maybe he was a little over dramatic in threatening to cancel their flight’s food for Saturday’s game – but it got the attention of his team and ultimately the win.
Stevens’ team is still sitting just outside of Playoff contention, but have the ability to gain some ground when they play the #7 seeded Indiana Pacers today. These two teams are among the hottest in the NBA, with the Pacers losing just once in their last 10 games, and the Celtics having won 8 of their past 11.
It should be an intense affair tonight in Indiana, let’s hope these boys have their energy.
