CM Punk May Not Make UFC Debut Until 2016

Everyone is still awaiting the announcement regarding the UFC debut of Phil ‘CM Punk’ Brooks.’ A new quote from his trainer hints that fans may have to wait past 2015.

“I would like a year, honestly,” he said. “Because I want him to be the best product for himself, for the organization, and for the industry. I mean, I want him to go out there and put on a great fight and do great things. Again, the value…his fans are amazing. I just think that his fans…his fans are just going to elevate out sport to a whole new level. MMA is big, but we can always get bigger, and I’m a firm believer that high tide raises all ships.

“What I like about the high tide is it’s helping a lot of people chase their dreams. I’m a firm believer that the big names can help all names in our industry, which I believe doesn’t help in boxing.”

I’m sure the UFC wants Punk to be at his very best when he debuts but the longer they wait the more the hype around him dies down. Many will argue that a star of his caliber will generate a buzz whenever he so pleases but the UFC needs to be strategic as to when they put him on a card. CM Punk making his debut in December isn’t the same as Punk debuting the Saturday before Summer Slam or Wrestlemania. The promo for that event would write itself.

It’s something we will have to watch closely as 2015 begins to slip away.
