The fallout from the NCAA scandal that almost crushed Syracuse University has started. The athletic director will be the first to go.
Syracuse.com is reporting that Orange AD — Daryl Gross is out after almost 10-years on the job.
Gross will remain in a position with the university, a source with direct knowledge said. An announcement is expected this morning, multiple sources said. Athletic employees are expected to participate in meetings regarding the move during the morning.
It will end more than a decade that Syracuse has spent with Gross at the helm of SU athletics. Gross oversaw the school’s transition into the bigger business era of college sports and ACC, along with nearly 10 years of breaking NCAA rules within its athletic programs.
The school announced his resignation just 12 days after NCAA sanctions led to the vacation of 108 wins, a fine of more than $1 million.
Gross was not implicated in directly breaking or ordering any rules to be broken during his tenure — but he’ll now be remembered for leading a charge to keep basketball player Fab Melo eligible. Melo had a grade from the previous year changed, with the work being done by a Syracuse staffer.
