This is just another instance where Jameis Winston is reminded how impactful the rape allegations from 2013 are on the rest of his life. Though Winston was never charged with any wrongdoing, and a disciplinary hearing overseen independently of any FSU officials also cleared Jameis of not violating the student conduct code, there are still many people who feel Winston should be in prison right now.
940WINZ, a Miami sports radio station, is apparently a media outlet that feels this way. On Tuesday, the station retweeted a story referencing Winston’s visit to the Buccaneers. A disgruntled fan replied to the station with sarcasm about the Bucs entertaining a “rapist.” Surprisingly, the station replied to the fan and the Bucs team, “that’s exactly what he is.”
940WINZ is a respected sports station part of the Clear Channel Media family, so it’s pretty shocking that the station would allow such irresponsibility, especially since Winston was never charged with anything. People are entitled opinions. However, respect for due process of the law is also very important. Even more surprising is that no one at the station felt anything was wrong with the tweet, as it still remains on the station’s Twitter timeline.
The most ironic part of this situation with 940WINZ is that they pretend to be concerned with sexual violence against women, but have no issues with objectifying women. Their website has a tab titles “Babes,” and they photo attached is that of a woman’s backside covered only with a tiny bikini bottom.
If you’re going to advocate women’s rights 940WINZ, maybe you start with how you portray them. The station’s Twitter account has since taken the tweet down and says they were only trying to be sarcastic. As we all know it’s very hard for anyone to decipher inflection in someone’s voice through Twitter, so it’s best to not try.
