After cutting DeSean Jackson last season, Eagles HC Chip Kelly began his reputation as a coach willing to do anything to make the team work. On Tuesday, Kelly made a blockbuster trade, giving away RB LeSean McCoy to the Bills for LB Kiko Alonzo.
He also cut veteran LB Trent Cole, who played with the Eagles for 11 years. With the moves Kelly has made with notable veterans, buzz around some players in the NFL indicate that they may be a little leery of signing with the Eagles under Kelly.
“In talking to players around the league about this move, they were left a little leery of Chip Kelly and asking, ‘What exactly is he doing?’” Cole said Wednesday. “It’s not just LeSean McCoy. He’s let go of Todd Herremans, he’s let go of Cary Williams, he’s let go of Trent Cole. This is a year after letting go of DeSean Jackson. You have to wonder if players are going to sit there and say, ‘I’m not sure if I want to play for the Eagles because I’m not sure if Chip Kelly is going to hang onto good players over the long run or value himself in the process,’” Cole added.
Bill Belicheck is famously known for trading away big name players for the sake of the team, so maybe Kelly is on the right track to winning a Super Bowl soon, if it works the same way.
