Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson was booked to fight #1 pound-for-pound fighter, Jon Jones, for his UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 187 but due to Jon losing his mind Rumble now has a new opponent. An opponent that he says is tougher than Jon Jones.
I spoke with Johnson on today’s media conference call and he had this to say about his new opponent, Daniel Cormier.
“Daniel has power, he has speed, good technique.”
“His wrestling is top notch. Nobody can deny that. For me, that’s great. And for him, that’s great. To me he’s just gonna be a tougher opponent. He might be shorter than me, but the dude packs a lot of power.”
He went on to explain the hunger DC will have during the fight and how that makes him dangerous.
“Now he has another chance and it’s just gonna be a tougher fight, for sure,” Johnson said. “I expect that. I’m a wrestler at heart and Daniel is a wrestler at heart. I know what it takes to be at this level and if you get a chance you gotta hop on it.”
I’m sure Rumble was looking forward to standing and trading shots with Jones for 5 rounds and a fight against Cormier could be an ugly wrestle-fest which doesn’t suit Johnson’s style.
