A former pastor charged in connection with his wife’s grisly murder sent emails to his male love interest saying he hoped she would die, prosecutors have revealed.
Richard Lee Shahan, 55, was arrested on January 1 last year as he boarded a plane from Nashville to Germany, six months after the body of his wife, Karen, was found at their house in Homewood.
Karen knew about her husband’s affairs with men and had told him to choose between them and their marriage before she was found stabbed to death, according to prosecutors.
‘I told him that he cannot keep both lives,’ she wrote in an email sent to a friend in February 2012, AL.com reported. ‘That he will have to lose one of them.’
She continued: ‘I said that if he was having any interactions that were not right before God that he should go to God and be completely honest with him because he knows anyway.
‘I told him that God will reveal it to me. I told him that any texting or gmailing that does not bring glory to God has to go…’
In his own emails, Shahan told one of the two men he was romantically involved with that he often thought of his wife’s death.
‘There is only one way I could become legally “single” and I have to wait until God grants me that gift,’ he wrote, according to court filings.
