Greg Monroe and the Detroit Pistons had a little rough patch last summer when Monroe wanted a big long term deal but Detroit didn’t bite, offering him a deal for less than Monroe felt he was worth. Monroe was a restricted free agent with Detroit able to match any offer that he signed from another team. So no team bit and Monroe signed the one year contract that makes him an unrestricted free agent this summer. Well, most believed Monroe was as good as gone even though he would be a great piece in the style of offense ran by a Stan Van Gundy team.

Stan Van Gundy concedes that the Detroit Pistons are “not entirely optimistic” about bringing Greg Monroe back.
Van Gundy, Detroit’s coach and team president, said the door isn’t closed, but Monroe can test the open market this offseason as an unrestricted free agent
The Pistons aren’t completely out of the running as they can pay Monroe the most out of any team, but the relationship may be fractured beyond repair. Van Gundy will have some work to do either making moves through the draft or come free agency to shore up the possible departure of Monroe.
