Well King James does own the firm that represents Thompson, so it would be in his best interest, to make sure Thompson is taken care of.
Brian Windhorst is reporting that James won’t negotiate a new deal, until Thompson’s contract status is resolved.

To that end, James doesn't plan to start talks with Cavs until Tristan Thompson's deal is settled. Currently those talks are stalled.

Thompson is represented by Rich Paul, who is also the agent for James. Thompson appeared close to an $80 million deal on the first day of free agency but talks have broken down.
