DeMar DeRozan is eying the summer and wants to be an unrestricted free agent.
Toronto Raptors General Manager Masai Ujiri confirmed that extension talks will not be happening with DeRozan as he is wanting to test the market for the best deal possible.
Ujiri spoke with Sportsnet.com on why they have given up on DeRozan’s extension.
There will be no extension talks with DeMar. He can only extend for a certain amount of money and I just foresee that DeMar sees himself – and we see him – as more than that type of a player. So I think DeMar is going to wait to see how it goes this year and do the best deal for himself, and we’ll do the best deal for ourselves, too.
The former USC Trojan will be a hot commodity this summer for his versatility defending both shooting guard and small forward positions. Not to mention is one of the best athletes in the NBA.
Ujiri spent some coins this summer on a new extension worth 4 years $64 million on center Jonas Valanciunas and signing coveted small forward DeMarre Carroll to a 4 year $60 million contract.
Question will be how much Ujiri is willing to spend on DeRozan?
DeRozan was an NBA All-Star in 2014 and last season averaged 20.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 35 minutes a game.
