There wasn’t nearly as much drama over the weekend in the college football world as I thought going in and most teams handled their business and some in a very impressive fashion.
While there wasn’t much moving in the top four, there are some new teams that need to be monitored going forward for sure.
Final Four
- Ohio State
Another week, another win for the Buckeyes. There was a little bit of drama early in the week on who would be starting at quarterback, but Urban Meyer put that to bed and named Cardale Jones the starter. A battle with #2 Michigan State looms big and you can’t sleep on the team up North whose coach loves him a good pair of khakis.
- Michigan State
The Spartans remained undefeated after an up and down performance against Central Michigan this weekend, but I have yet to be blown away by one of their performances. Their best win to date is a three point win over an Oregon team who just got blown out by Utah in their own stadium. Not exactly a ringing endorsement at the moment.
- TCU
The Frogs survived a big scare in Lubbock over the weekend after running back Aaron Green caught a deflected pass in the end zone on fourth down at the end of the game. TCU is living on a prayer right now, but they are still undefeated. Their offense can play with anyone, but it is obvious they are going to have to lean heavily on them as the season goes on.
- Ole Miss
After a big road victory against Alabama, Ole Miss had a rather lackluster win over Vanderbilt at home. A win is a win, but the Rebels will need to play better against Florida in The Swamp this coming weekend.
Missed The Cut
- Baylor
The Bears put up 70 on Rice over the weekend and continue to look like the offensive juggernaut we all know they are. I’m looking forward to their showdown with TCU down the road that should determine the Big 12 champion (hopefully).
- UCLA
Despite a hostile road environment and recently losing Myles Jack, the Bruins absolutely rolled Arizona in their own house this weekend. Josh Rosen is for real and so are the Bruins. Keep an eye on them going forward.
- Notre Dame
The Fighting Irish keep on winning. While beating UMass isn’t something to get excited about, this week’s Clemson game will have huge playoff implications.
- Georgia
The Dawgs have a chance to put themselves right in the thick of the playoff hunt with a win over Alabama between the hedges this weekend. That game will separate the contenders from the pretenders.
- LSU
Leonard Fournette. That’s really all that needs to be said right now.
- Utah
Time to start giving the Utes some love here. Their dismantling of Oregon in Autzen this weekend was one of the most impressive beat downs I’ve seen in some time. The Pac 12 South is wide open and the Utes are in the thick of things.
