Ex-Texas A&M Football Player Thomas Johnson Arrested For Murder

Thomas-Johnson

The story of former Texas A&M wide receiver Thomas Johnson was already a strange one after he randomly disappeared from school, but it just got stranger today.

It is being reported that the former Aggie wideout was arrested for murder after he allegedly stabbed a jogger to death in Dallas.

After the incident, Johnson was apprehended after he called 911 and the victim later died at a nearby hospital.

Here are the details from the Dallas Morning News:

Former Texas A&M football player Thomas Linze Johnson was out of football and out of his home.

And, Dallas police say, he was angry. Johnson allegedly took out that rage Monday morning by hacking a jogger to death with a “large-edged weapon” on the White Rock Creek Trail, police said.

“It appears Mr. Johnson picked this victim at random. Absolutely random,” Deputy Chief Rob Sherwin said. “He just attacked him … It’s just very unusual. It’s quite shocking.”

Johnson, a former star wide receiver, will be charged with murder. He is currently in Dallas County jail.

Police said officers were called shortly before 8 a.m. and found a man stabbed near White Rock Creek Trail underneath Walnut Hill Lane.

Sherwin said police found Johnson after he walked up to the an equestrian center and called 911.

Johnson hasn’t played for Texas A&M since 2012. He had three catches for 22 yards in A&M’s 29-24 win at No. 1 Alabama in 2012. He mysteriously disappeared days later. He resurfaced, but never played college football again.

But last year, Johnson was arrested on three charges — evading arrest, burglary of a habitation and auto theft — in Dallas County last year. He allegedly broke into his aunt’s house and stole her mini van and money.

The aunt told police then that Johnson “had been causing problems in the family for a long period of time,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

This entire story is sad in so many ones. On one end someone just lost a loved one to what looks like a random act of violence, and on the other hand a young man who was at one time destined to be a good college football player, seems to have completely lost his way.

The story of Thomas Johnson is one that will be told from now to the end of time. Kid was once a highly recruited high school star, and now he may be looking at life in prison or worse. My heart goes out to both families involved in this tragedy as they have both lost a loved one in different ways.
