Last year Oscar Pistorius was convicted of manslaughter for the shooting of his wife Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. Steenkamp’s family is currently appealing the manslaughter decision and pushing for Pistorius to be convicted of murder but that appeal won’t be heard until November 3rd.
In the meantime, Pistorius will be a free man. BBC News is reporting that Oscar will be released from prison on October 20th and he will continue to serve his sentence under house arrest.
Even though Pistorius is now shamed and no longer considered a national hero in South Africa, it shows you how much leeway fame and notoriety can buy someone. The majority of people would never see the world as a free man again after killing their wife/spouse, yet it is assumed that Pistorius will be able to return to his track career and live a relatively normal life while under house arrest.
