Halfway through the college football season you’re probably familiar with running backs like Leonard Fournette, Derrick Harvey and Ezekiel Elliot, but there’s another running back many have never heard of that’s having a better statistical season than all three.
Through seven games, Christian McCaffrey, sophomore running back from Stanford, leads the nation in all-purpose yards and yards per game with 1,818 and 259.71 ypg respectively. Last Saturday against Washington, McCaffrey racked up over 300 all-purpose yards including 109 rushing, and another 112 receiving for the 6-1 Cardinal. He also scored two touchdowns and ran back three kickoffs for 80 yards.
If the name sounds familiar it’s because his father, Ed McCaffrey, was an all-pro wide receiver with the Denver Broncos and a two-time super bowl champion. He’s a different type of athlete than his father. The younger McCaffrey, at 5’10 202, has an exceptional combination of speed and quickness. He’s also a very physical back that routinely runs through arm tackles. It’s hard to say exactly why McCaffrey’s name hasn’t been mentioned as much as other top players in college football. Whatever the reason, when it’s all said and done he may end up in New York for the Heisman trophy presentation.
