BSO Review: Empire Season 2 Episode 7

Empire

True Love Never

Is it just me or did Empire lose its spark? Ratings have fallen since its first season and I really don’t see too many people talking about it like I used to.  Nonetheless, let’s get into highlights of episode 7.

Cookie Falling in Lust?

Cookie and her sketchy boy toy have been getting hot and heavy.  She reveals she had been staying over his house for a few days. They also make a deal with Hakeem’s kidnappers to act as security for their upcoming concert.  I’m still waiting for Hakeem to put 2 and 2 together and realize that his mother is sleeping with the enemy.

Jamal and Lyon Dynasty?

Jamal has been going behind his father’s back and getting help from Cookie.  He sends Cookie some audio to get her help with it.  Jamal misses the chemistry he and his mother had when it came to making hit songs.  I know Lucious is not going to share Jamal so he will have to choose between Empire and The Lyon Dynasty. Who do you think he will choose?

Boom Boom Boom

Is Empire trying to make this song the new ‘Drip Drop’? I swear they played the song like 50 times in this one episode.  Lucious and Freda Gatz pour their hearts out on that song while he brought an actual gun to the studio for the real sound effects.

Hakeem Enlists Help From Tiana

Hakeem gets the help from Tiana to get his lead singer, Laura, right. She has the vocals to be lead but not the attitude.  She’s more of a shy good girl but in order to be lead and steal the shine you have to give attitude. He gets Laura to perform a Spanish version of “I Will Survive” in a crowd of people to help build her confidence. Her confidence wasn’t the only thing she built, as we see her finally share a kiss with Hakeem. Hakeem’s got him a good girl.

Lucious Gets Freaky

Lucious and Mimi get a little too close in this episode.  After Mimi helps Empire get a music streaming deal, the two head back to his house to celebrate.  They also bring a random girl, who looks down for threesome, with them. When Mimi gets a call from one of her lovers and starts to cry, Lucious grabs the phone and tells Mimi she deserves to be treated better than that.  Since when did Lucious get feelings?

This Empire episode was all over the place, but the previews for next week look promising. Vivica A. Fox is set to join the cast next week, so maybe she can help get these ratings back up.

As always, you can catch Empire on Wednesdays at 9 pm on FOX.
