The WWE has wanted Roman Reigns to become “the guy” for quite sometime and it seems as though they were just a few weeks away from seeing their year-long plan come to fruition, then Rollins’ injury sent all of them back to the drawing board.
According to Dave Meltzer, Reigns was scheduled to defeat Rollins at Survivor Series and carry the belt into Royal Rumble.
“Roman was going to win it at Survivor Series, that was the plan, I figured it, but I didn’t know for sure, but in fact it is for sure, he was going to win it at Survivor Series, I don’t know if he’s going to win the tournament, because they have to get a heel hot.”
Meltzer has been hit or miss on his insider information before but it’s not surprising to hear that Reigns was going to go over on Rollins. Seth had held the title for over 6 months, a long run for a WWE champion, and placing the belt on Reigns would set up a possible heel-turn for one of the most booed superstars in the WWE.
The Reigns heel turn could still occur and we could see Super Cena return to take on the new face of The Authority… A fan can dream right?
The 8-man tournament to crown the next champion will begin tonight on RAW and you can expect Roman to compete for the belt.
