As a wise man once said, you don’t trade players you trade salaries.
With that in mind, David Aldridge reports that the expiring contract of David Lee, worth nearly 16 million, is up for grabs. That shouldn’t be a surprise, Lee hasn’t seen a ton of time and is in a log jam at the four, but what is exciting about this news is the understanding that this expiring contract is key if they Celtics want to add any sort of superstar level talent. Without his contract they would have to unload half their roster for any star level contract to fit.
You have to wonder if this could be the first step towards the NBA’s first blockbuster trade in a while? Boston would seem to have all the right pieces with the big expiring contract and the Brooklyn Nets first round pick this year. Could this be enough to get Boogie out of Sacramento? Dwight out of Houston? Carmelo out of NY?
