Tyler Perry is no stranger to producing plays and musicals but Fox tabbing him as the voice & host of the The Passion Easter musical seems a bit odd.
Unfortunately, I’m amongst the majority of Americans that hear Tyler Perry and instantly think of Madea. I’m assuming the larger than life character will not make an appearance in a biblical play, but you really never know.
The details surrounding the play are still vague but according to reports it seems as though the musical is geared toward entertainment and not history.
The two-hour live musical event will be broadcast from New Orleans; though the production promises big names performing popular music, the cast has not yet been announced. Adam Anders (Glee) will arrange the musical numbers. – TVline.com
The Glee director’s involvement screams over-the-top musical. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nene Leaks cast in a major role. If that’s not enough to peak your interest, here’s more plot details:
The Passion is a modern retelling of the last days of Jesus of Nazareth’s life, ending with his crucifixion and resurrection. Fox’s ambitious staging will involve many iconic New Orleans locations, “culminating in a procession of hundreds carrying a 20-foo, illuminated cross from Champion Square outside the Superdome to the live stage at Woldenburg Park on the banks of the Mississippi River,” says Fox.
On March 20, 2016 The Passion will air Live on Fox. Mark your calendars because this will either be an amazing night of music and storytelling or an absolute train-wreck.
