BSO Top 20: Who’s #1?, Big Schools Falling & SMU Unbeaten

To say this past week in college basketball was wild would be the understatement of the year.

13 ranked teams lost to unranked opponents.

Yes, 13.

With that in mind, as you could imagine there’s been tons of turnover in this week’s top 20.

1. Oklahoma Sooners – After their heartbreaking three overtime loss to Kansas two weeks ago, the Sooners have rattled off three straight wins, with the latest one being over highly ranked West Virginia.

Any given day in the Big 12 you can lose, so Oklahoma’s quick start in conference play isn’t nothing to snooze on.

Opponents this week: @ Iowa State and @ Baylor.

UNC rolling

2. North Carolina Tar Heels – Based on the eye test, there may not be another team better than the one in Chapel Hill.

While everyone below them in the ACC is beating up on each other, the Heels find themselves off to a 5-0 start in conference play.

Opponents this week: vs. Wake Forest and @ Virginia Tech.

3. Kansas Jayhawks – All in all, this wasn’t a good week for the Jayhawks, but when you’re a team with national championship aspirations, I have to nitpick.

Kansas lost their first game in forever when they fell to a very good West Virginia team on the road. It was the Jayhawks third straight loss in Morgantown.

However, Bill Self’s team got back in the win column after taking down TCU 70-63.

Opponents this week: @ Oklahoma State and vs. Texas.

4. Villanova Wildcats – Here we are again with Jay Wright’s team holding the fort in a very competitive Big East conference.

The Wildcats are 5-0 in conference play after defeating Marquette and Georgetown this past week.

Scary thing is, Nova isn’t shooting the three ball as well as they were last year, which should balance out as the season goes on.

Opponents this week: @ Seton Hall and vs. Providence.

5. Xavier Muskateers – Minus their 31-point blowout loss to Villanova a few weeks ago, the Muskateers have been perfect.

With so much basketball left to be played, they’ll have the opportunity to reign as Big East champions.

Opponents this week: vs. Georgetown and vs. Seton Hall.

SMU undefeated

6. SMU Mustangs – 17-0.

Man, it’s a shame this team isn’t eligible to play in the NCAA tournament because they could very well have ended up as a number one seed.

Will they go undefeated?

As of right now, there’s no ranked teams on their remaining schedule, so you make the call.

7. Iowa Hawkeyes – Are they the best team in the Big 10?

Maryland and Melo Trimble will have something to say about that question, but the Hawkeyes sure are making a strong case after sweeping Michigan State.

Opponents this week: @ Rutgers and vs. Purdue.

WVU upsets Kansas

8. West Virginia Mountaineers – Bob Huggins team had the definition of a bitter-sweet week.

It started off by knocking off top ranked Kansas, but then they lost a tight one to Oklahoma in Norman.

With that being said, this Mountaineers ball club proved they’re not only one of the top teams in the Big 12, but that they’re one of the best teams in America.

Opponents this week: vs. Texas and @ Texas Tech.

9. Maryland Terrapins – Following Melo Trimble’s game winning three at Wisconsin, it came as no surprise to see the Terps drop a road game.

That’s exactly what happened when Maryland visited Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Nonetheless, Maryland took their frustrations out on the lonely Buckeyes, as they slaughtered them 100-65.

Opponents this week: vs. Northwestern and @ Michigan State.

10. Texas A&M Aggies – With all of the upsets transpiring, the Aggies were the only team worthy of holding down the final spot in the top 10.

After all, they’re first in the SEC with an 5-0 conference record to go along with an 15-2 overall record.

Teams on the outside looking in: (11) Arizona Wildcats, (12) USC Trojans, (13) Louisville Cardinals, (14) Baylor Bears, (15) Clemson Tigers, (16) Indiana Hoosiers, (17) Michigan State Spartans, (18) Duke Blue Devils, (19) South Carolina Gamecocks, (20) Pittsburgh Panthers.
