Fresh off the heels of Will Smith’s concussion movie, a damaging new report suggests that colleges are allowing players with a history of incapacitating concussions to transfer and play immediately.
The report chronicles several players including former University of Arizona Linebacker, Dakota Conwell. Conwell suffered multiple concussions and was eventually barred from playing by team doctors. Conwell later transferred to West Liberty University where he is now the starting quarterback.
Randy Cohen, the head athletic trainer from the University of Arizona had this quote,
“If [you] want to go somewhere else, you can find someone to clear you for virtually anything. “The risk assessment for each institution is different.”
The report goes on to highlight several instances in which player disqualifications due to concussions are not tracked, which ultimately allows them to play at a different school.
If there is any validity to this investigation, there will be some serious consequences for all involved. The number one priority should be for the health and well-being for all players that choose to participate in college athletics.
