Steve Smith is one of those players you have to listen to when he speaks. Smith spent most of this career with the Carolina Panthers and has always been a supporter of Cam Newton but he speaks the truth. Cam had a great season and is just one week away from playing in Super Bowl 50. He continues to receive criticism for simply for being who he is, a young, black, talented, and gifted quarterback who has a personality and a smile that people just gravitate to. Steve Smith feels Cam maybe a little arrogant but admits his skin color also plays a role in Cam being such a polarizing figure.
“I think it has to do with a little bit of arrogance and also, I hate to say it this way, possibly the color of your skin playing quarterback,” Smith said Thursday on “The Dan Patrick Show.” “I think it does.”
According to BleacherReport, Smith also spoke on how Richard Sherman was the focus on media outlets about 2 years ago after giving an emotional post game interview.
“Automatically people started calling him a thug,” Smith said. “They don’t call Aaron Rodgers [a] thug. They don’t call other guys of other colors thugs, but as soon as an African-American athlete does it, they say, ‘thug.’ “
I see Smith’s point, I totally get it but I wouldn’t completely agree that it’s because he’s black. I think its more so the culture that comes alone with being black. I would love for use to be in a world where everyone is treated fair and equally but that’s not the case. With Cam, I think the color of his skin is much more accepted than his dancing, the Dabbing and all the different first down and touchdown celebrations. Those things are apart of his style, his up bringing and his culture in my eyes. Regardless, it doesn’t seem like Cam is bothered by any of it, he continues to play well on the field and does it exactly they way he wants to.
