The New york Knicks will hit free agency this summer with the goal of creating a championship caliber team. Many believe that they’ll just find another way to disappoint their fan base but there’s a few moves already in the works that could make the Knicks immediate title contenders next season.
The first move was the release of head coach Derek Fisher. Fisher had lost the locker room and his harsh comments were off putting to some upcoming free agents. One of those free agents was Rajon Rondo.
Fisher had some harsh criticism of Ronda earlier in the season.
“That’s your decision on whether or not he’s elite or not. You can’t ask him when he wasn’t very successful playing against it whether or not he wants to play in it. That’s his opinion. That’s fine. He doesn’t play for us. We’re not concerned about his opinion about us at this point.”
With the departure of Fisher the Knicks are now back in the running to land Rondo and improve their back court with a pass first ball handler.
According to an NBA source, the Kings point guard will still “keep an open mind’’ regarding the Knicks this July when he becomes a free agent, despite Fisher’s cutting remarks.
Rondo’s skill set fits the Knicks current roster. Porzingis is young but has shown the ability to score from inside and out, while Melo is a score first player that needs the ball in his hands. Rondo would be able to limit Melo’s isolation plays while still keeping his number up with catch and shoot opportunities.
There’s other free agent point guards on the market that could fill the Knicks void but a one with NBA championship experience doesn’t come along often.
