In the quarterback musical chairs we are calling the 2016 free agency class is in full swing. Chip Kelly and the 49ers have begun making moves starting with the signing of QB Thad Lewis. Details from CSN Bay Area:
Lewis is familiar with Kelly’s system after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 21. He did not appear in any games.
Lewis, 28, has not seen action in an NFL regular-season game since 2013, when he completed 93 of 157 attempts (59.2 percent) for 1,092 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions in five starts with the Buffalo Bills.
He may not be the biggest of names, but under the right system, Lewis has potential. For a free agent quarterback, potential is sometimes more valuable than experience- ask Matt Flynn or Matt Cassell.
Where does this leave Colin Kaepernick?
You have to believe somewhere else. Why? Not because he wouldn’t fit in the Chip Kelly system, it seems like would be a very good fit, but he is not Chip Kelly’s guy, which proves to be more important than talent sometimes. If we’ve seen anything it’s Chip get rid of established stars for the potential of something else.
