He hasn’t been the most talked about guy pre-NFL Draft — but Cardale Jones name will likely be on the tongue of top league personnel leading up to the big day.
Jones made himself some money on Friday and cemented his status as an intriguing prospect — standing six-foot-5, 253-pound with a bazooka of an arm.
Jones was unable to throw at the NFL Combine last month after suffering a hamstring injury while running the 40-yard dash.
Nobody is suggesting that Jones will be a star or a franchise quarterback capable of saving the Cleveland Browns for example — but he showed that he has all the physical tools to lead an NFL team. Now the questions about leadership and demeanor are something will Jones will have to improve on his own.
But he’s must have for a coach or offensive coordinator that wants to push the ball down the field — with a quarterback unafraid to sling it. He’ll have to avoid the ugly interception while trying to stick a pass into coverage, but he’s got enormous potential.
It appears he took the first step.
Throwing with famed quarterback guru George Whitfield looking on, Cardale’s only misses were a couple of deep routes that were overthrown.
Jones had the ball popping into the hands of receivers and while completing deep balls effortlessly. He showed that he’s a lot more athletic than we expected — displaying solid footwork in his dropback — which was a concern to some.
He makes sense for a team that can see his potential, hopefully developing into a guy that could become a Ben Roethlisberger type under center — while making the necessary plays to win games.
Say what you want — but Urban Meyer and company stunted Cardale’s growth at Ohio State and he’ll grow leaps and bounds under the tutelage of a real quarterbacks coach.
