The NFL owners meetings are taking place this week in Boca Raton, and that means tons of speculation and reports. According to ESPN writer Jeff Legwold, the defending Super Bowl Champions are taking a long look at Robert Griffin. Head coach Gary Kubiak stated:
[Griffin] is one of the free guys out there. He’s obviously been part of the conversation. We’ll see what happens; he’s a talented young man.
The Broncos are an interesting team for a couple reasons. The team’s defense is so good it can overcome shaky quarterback play. Griffin would have time to develop and the defense could absorb the growing pains. And, there is the Shanahan connection. Kubiak was Shanahan’s OC for ten years in Denver. The offense Griffin knows from Washington is very similar to what Kubiak runs now in Denver.
But, there is the question of loyalty. Everyone knows the NFL has tight circles and people talk. Kubiak is loyal to Shanahan and we know about the issues Robert had with Mike. Will Kubiak’s loyalty limit further exploration. He said no when asked about Griffin and Shanahan:
I don’t like hearing that. We’re going to do our evaluations, evaluate every player that’s out there in free agency.
As you know Griffin did not play in 2015 and was subsequently released by the Washington professional football team (I don’t use their name). He last played in 2014 and it’s easy to forget this was a former #2 overall pick and the 2012 offensive rookie of the year. Griffin has also been linked to the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns in free agency. Given that Mark Sanchez is the only other QB on the Broncos roster, it would be worth it for Denver to seriously consider Griffin, loyalties aside.
