Dwight Howard was once known as the best big man in basketball, but due to injuries or because of the system that he plays in his stature around the league has dissipated. Howard is likely to opt out of his contract with the Houston Rockets, and become a free agent. According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN one of the teams interested in Howard happens to be the Dallas Mavericks.
“Sources say the Mavericks interest in Dwight Howard as a free agent this summer will depend on the price. The Mavericks don’t intend to be in on the bidding war for Howard if it’s in the neighborhood of a max contract, which would have a starting salary of more than $30 million. Howard’s durability and desire have caused the Mavs to decide he isn’t worth a nine figure investment over four years at this point.”
Howard could definitely help out the Dallas Mavericks because of his abilities on the defensive side of the ball. His lack of offense, and inability to make free throws would be the reason to not give Howard a max contract he is seeking. Howard is only averaging 13.8 points and 11.8 rebounds per game which isn’t quite max dollars worthy.
If you are going to give a player max dollars which is going to be more than $30 million because of the increase in the salary cap it has to be a player who is going to deliver you a championship.
Howard in my opinion is not worth the max, but there is always a team out there willing to overpay as we have seen in the past.
