The Dallas Cowboys are sitting at the #4 spot in the NFL Draft, a position they aren’t used to holding, and if things go to plan they won’t select in the top half for years to come.
That begs the question, is it time to grab Tony Romo’s replacement?
Confirming that Cowboys worked out Jared Goff in Berkeley this morning. Jerry Jones+Jason Garrett there. Jones reportedly loved what he saw.

The chance to select a top 5 QB, even in this year’s draft, doesn’t come along very often. Do the Cowboys pass on an impact player to have one that rides the bench for two years?
There’s a few positives to taking the QB of the future at #4. The Cowboys will have a solid back-up for Romo who’s last full season came in 2012. It’d also allow Goff to become comfortable with their other playmakers so that he’s ready to slide right in when Romo moves on and the team doesn’t lose a beat; i.e. Aaron Rodgers.
There are downsides of course, they’d be wasting Romo’s prime years by not investing in a top 5 player, they may alienate Romo and Goff may not be available at #4.
We’ve seen that Jerry isn’t the end all be all in the Cowboys front office, they really dodged a bullet on that Manziel guy, but he still has great pull. If Jerry falls in love with a QB it’ll be hard to talk him out of it.
