Man, just when you thought Craig Sager couldn’t be even more amazing, he shocks you.

While currently battling with leukemia, Sager has continued to place smiles on the faces of those who are part of the NBA fraternity across the country. In a piece that will be issued in the May 2nd addition of Sports illustrated, Sager recalls the time where he talked once Bad Boy Piston star, Dennis Rodman, from committing suicide at a strip club.

An interview with Sager should really be conducted at the dog track, where he used to own greyhounds, or a Hooters, where servers clad in Sager Orange bring him Bud Light and buffalo shrimp. He should be perched on a barstool next to his wife, Stacy—a former Bulls dancer 21 years his junior—regaling strangers with a story about Dennis Rodman, who went AWOL from the Pistons in 1993 and planned to commit suicide, until Sager tracked down the Worm on the second floor of a Detroit strip club. “The Landing Strip,” Sager recalls. “He had the gun. He was going to do it. I told him how stupid that would be.”

The very selfless and courageous Sager has proven that he’s a fighter on and off the court.

It’s stories like this that give merit to why Sager is so respected by players and peers alike. Keep fighting the good fight Sager, the league is rooting for you. And I’m sure Rodman is as well.
