The Dallas Cowboys sit at #4 in this year’s NFL Draft and have the luxury of having their franchise QB already on the roster. That allows them to fill their holes with elite level talent and immediately compete in the NFC East.
Many assume that the Cowboys will go defense with their first round pick and who’d blame them? The defensive line is in shambles due to free agency & suspensions, the linebacker corps struggles to stay healthy and the secondary is far from being considered mediocre. Mix in their lack of cap space and you have major problems in the forthcoming years.
That’s why the Cowboys should push for a championship now and the best way to do so is by keeping Tony Romo healthy. The Cowboys already have the best offensive line in the NFL and the stars of that line are all under 26 years old. The one spot that doesn’t feature youth is right tackle.
Doug Free was just re-signed by the Cowboys but the $21 million, 3 year contract only guarantees $7 million. That means he’s only locked in for a year and why not replace him with an athletic upgrade?
Laremy Tunsil was the best offensive lineman in the country his senior year of high school, a dominant blocker in the SEC and will project as a top 3 right tackle. Tunsil is thought of as a left tackle but his run blocking skills, quick feet & the Cowboy’s luxury of having an All-Pro left tackle will allow him to develop on the right side.
Dallas will have the ability to look at prospects such as DT Robert Nkemdiche, DE Noah Spence or RB Derrick Henry in the 2nd round.
Protecting Tony Romo is priority number one for that front office and it’ll be easier to plug Romo’s predecessor in behind the league’s best young line.
