Former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp, known to be a bit of a surly individual, finds himself in the news again. Current Baltimore Raven Timmy Jernigan, attempted to pay homage to Sapp by switching to number 99. The number Sapp wore throughout his Hall of Fame career. However, Sapp wants no part of the tribute. According to the Sporting News this was a sincere gesture by Jernigan, who idolizes Sapp, saying:
I looked up to him. I definitely wanted to model my game after him. It’s definitely a number that I wanted coming out of college, but Chris (Canty) had it, so I had to respect the situation until I was able to get it.
Nice words from the young man and Sapp smacks it away like a parent scolding a young child. Too bad for Timmy, but maybe he can use the rejection from Sapp as motivation to be a better player going forward.
