The daughter of Eric Garner, the New York resident who died after NYPD placed him in a choke hold, is calling out ABC Network for what she calls exploitation of black pain.
During President Obama’s recent town hall meeting, Garner walked out in protest after the network did not live up to their promise to highlight her questions. Following the meeting, Garner sent Huffington Post a video statement to further explain why she walked out and her discontent with ABC.
“ABC is using black lives as a rating and to get paid…They guaranteed me that I would be asking the president direct questions about what’s going on. I was lied to.”
Garner, who was invited to the event specifically by the head of Disney, said she felt “disrespected” by producers.
“I had to stage a walkout by myself. And I went out there I had to yell, scream, and eventually I was able to speak to the president. It’s a shame as black people that we have to yell and become belligerent to have our voices heard.”
In the aftermath ABC issued the following statement,
“We took an extra 30 minutes to get to as many people as we could during the town hall. The President spoke to several people after the event ended, including at length with Erica Garner.”
