Jerry West on If He Would’ve Left Lakers If They Had Free Agency

Jerry West says he hasn't seen a better coach than Gregg Popovich

Can you imagine if free agency in the NBA existed during Jerry West’s playing days?

West appeared on The TK Show hosted by San Jose Mercury sports columnist Tim Kawakam and he made an interesting statement regarding free agency if it was around during his time.

I remember years ago, if I had an opportunity to leave the Lakers I would have left, for one reason: because I did not like an owner that was not telling me the truth. It would have made no difference what they would have offered me, I would have left. It’s easy to say after the fact, but players have earned the right to go where they want to go.

If iconic franchise players had free agency available to them, some would definitely move around the league much like today’s players do.
