In all honesty, The Miami Hurricanes haven’t been ‘The U’ for quite sometime now. Somehow a disconnect from the mid-2000’s carried on thru the present and the school has lost some of the attitude that once made it one of the nation’s most feared college football programs.
Enter, Marc Richt & adidas.
There’s never just a singular reason for change and at Miami they’ve made a concise effort to focus on re-establishing their mystique. First year Miami head coach, and former Georgia Bulldogs H.C., Mark Richt made his presence felt immediately when he took over the Hurricane program.
Gone were the multitudinous uniforms and accessories. Instead, Richt opted to return to the uniforms that struck fear into opponents for decades and the clean white helmets synonymous with the Miami brand.
For this culture to take hold, a change in attitude was necessary.
“He [Coach Richt] isn’t just a great coach but a great guy,” said Assistant AD of Equipment Operations David Case. “Our kids know that he believes in them and that he;s going to do the right thing for them. Everyone knows he knows how to do it [win], you can’t argue with his success at Georgia.”
When asked about the change in the player’s attitudes in the locker room since Richt arrived he had this to say,
“We’re definitely getting there. I think this season we are getting back to what to be Miami. The guys maybe aren’t as brash and crazy as they were back in the day but they’ve got that swagger back.”
Richt’s ideas are great but he also needed a partner to help implement them; that’s where adidas took the baton.
It would’ve been easy to just revert back to the original designs and call it a day but adidas found ways to modernize the classics and provide student-athletes with flair within the bounds of uniformity.
The classic design of the uniforms are familiar to even the oldest of Hurricane fans but the greatness is in the details.
The fabrics, fit, color gradation and PE cleats are just some of the ways adidas has allowed Miami to regain its aura while adding a 21st century twist.
It should come as no surprise that the “Make Old School Cool” approach by Coach Richt and adidas led to the team breaking a decade long bowl losing streak by defeating #13 ranked West Virgina (31-14) in the Russell Athletics bowl.
