Chicago Bulls PG Rajon Rondo can see the end of his career on the distant horizon; and he’s making it clear that he sees himself stepping into coaching, similar to the way former guards Jason Kidd & Derek Fisher transitioned.
“That’s the plan. Hopefully I can transition right into it after playing instead of having to sit out or going a different route,” Rondo said. “I know it’s not an easy job. But I respect that this is the highest level of being a coach. If I needed to go an assistant route, I’d do it. But I don’t know if it would need that.”
Rondo, who told the Chicago Tribune he’s been preparing to coach since his 2014 departure from the Boston Celtics; clearly has the mind of a coach. It’s evident in his game, the way he talks about basketball; & the way he reads & reacts to other players…he is the definition of a “floor general”.
“I study all of my coaches. I watch the way they move, the timeouts they call, plays they draw up out of timeouts, how they run practices, speeches they give. I’m trying to follow it all. I see how players gravitate toward different coaches.”
Rondo has the kind of focus that an NBA coach would require, however; patience? Thats another story. We’ve seen a few incidents on the court in which Rajon Rondo has lost it, and it’s cost his teams & ultimately led to his departure. Everyone can grow & evolve, the question will be, will he?
